City Council Advances Big Water Fixes for the Valley
On June 16, Youngstown City Council gave the green light to two major water system upgrades totaling $18 million. One project targets the Webb Road pump station, which helps deliver water to Austintown and Canfield. The other focuses on replacing aging pipes and lead service lines on the cityās North Side. Officials say the improvements will boost water quality and reliability for thousands of local residents, especially in areas long overdue for updates.
Phase Two of East Palestine Park Construction Centers on Pool Development
Over the past few months, East Palestine Village Park has seen significant progress with nearly completed pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, and the removal of old court fencing. Phase Two, focused on building a new pool next to the community center, began this week and is set to continue through the end of 2025, aiming for a 2026 opening. Despite delays in supplies for the new amphitheater, Village Manager Antonio Diaz-Guy assures the $25 million revitalization project, funded by Norfolk Southern after the 2023 train derailment, is on track. He invites residents to visit the park to see the ongoing work for themselves. The village will also celebrate its 150th anniversary on July 12, 2025, with a parade, family activities, and an oldies concert, all free and open to the public.
Columbiana County to Raise Sewer Rates
In Columbiana County, sewer rates for unincorporated areas relying on county services are increasing starting July 1, 2025, to address a $185,000 revenue shortfall from 2024. The county, which hasnāt raised rates since 2017 despite a 26% rise in the Consumer Price Index, will implement a 10% hike this year, another 10% in 2026, and a 5% increase in 2027. This gradual approach aims to ease the burden on residents while ensuring the department can cover expenses and maintain vital sewer services, which are critical for environmental protection and public health. The increase will appear on bills after the next meter reading in July.
Business Brief

Summer Nights & Screen Delights at Elm Road Drive-In
Tucked away in Warren, Ohio, the Elm Road Drive-In Theatre has been lighting up the night sky since 1950āand it's still going strong. One of the last of its kind in the state, this nostalgic gem blends classic Americana with family-friendly fun under the stars. My most recent trip there was just this past Friday night to catch Lilo & Stitch, which turned out to be the perfect heartwarming pick for a warm summer evening. The lot filled up with cars, lawn chairs, and blankets as families settled in for the show.
A few tips from someone who's been: bring cash for your tickets at the gate (theyāre old school like that), but rest easy knowing the concession stand takes cardsāand youāll definitely want to hit it up. We grabbed corn dogs, fries, and some crispy chicken tenders that hit the spot. With a laid-back atmosphere, friendly crowd, and food that rivals some local diners, the Elm Road Drive-In is more than just a movieāitās a memory in the making. If youāre looking for an affordable, feel-good outing with the family, this spot should be at the top of your list.

The Beautiful Town Center At Firestone Farms in Columbiana
TownCenter at Firestone Farms in Columbiana, is the spot to be! This beautiful outdoor shopping and dining destination blends 1930s Harvey S. Firestone-inspired architecture with a relaxed, modern vibe. The courtyard is perfect for pictures, complete with a clock tower, fountain, and fun games like giant chess and bocce. We enjoyed exploring the wine festival last week, tasting delicious wines, a variety of food-truck and restaurant options, and soaking in the lively community with a free summer concert. Itās the perfect spot to shop, dine, and unwind.

Meet Chucky: The Pup with Personality (and a Golf Outing to Help Pups Like Him!)

Darcy is a playful, sweet-hearted pup whoās had a rough go but hasnāt let it dim her spirit. She and her daughter Dusty were left behind at the pound after being found running looseāand sadly, never reclaimed. Since then, Darcy has been living at the rescue, proving to be both lovable and full of personality. Sheās turning four this October, loves her walks, and has a real talent for mischief (so make sure that leash is snugāsheās a bit of an escape artist). While she can be dog selective, sheās gotten along with others at the rescue and would thrive in a home that understands her spunky ways.
Thinking about helping dogs like Darcy? Becoming a foster is one of the best things you can doāand it doesnāt cost a thing. The rescue covers all expenses, from food and vet visits to toys and treats. You can foster on your own schedule, travel when you want (theyāll help rehome the pup while youāre gone), and even choose which dog you want to foster. It's a flexible, rewarding way to make a big differenceāespecially for dogs like Darcy, who just need a second chance and a soft place to land.
