Steel Valley Spotlight

Birdfish Brewing Blends Beer and Purpose
Birdfish Brewing Co. in Columbiana is getting creative this October with a limited-edition blueberry oatmeal beer brewed to support breast cancer care. Packed with rich flavor and brewed with heart, this small-batch release helps raise funds for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. It’s a perfect mix of community support and local craft, and every pour goes toward a meaningful cause. Whether you’re a craft beer fan or simply want to support local efforts, this is one fall release worth checking out.
Local marching band celebrates 100th anniversary
East Liverpool's marching band is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, honoring a century of musical tradition, school enthusiasm, and local pride. To mark the occasion, the members are sporting fresh uniforms and organizing exciting events, such as the upcoming "Glow Crazy" show in October that invites five nearby bands to join in a illuminated spectacle at Patterson Field, where the stadium lights will be dimmed and colored to match each school's hues, with participants encouraged to decorate their instruments and outfits with glowing lights like LEDs and fairy strings. The band will also showcase special centennial routines during halftime at every Potter football game.
Youngstown Foundation announces $1.2 million in grants
The Youngstown Foundation revealed $1.2 million in grants on Monday, with $400,000 going to the Butler Institute of American Art to fund two key renovation initiatives aimed at boosting accessibility and educational quality. As a cherished cultural hub that has enriched the community for over a century and attracted global visitors, the Butler will use the funds to preserve its art collection through improved storage and to launch a creativity center focused on programs blending art, education, and entrepreneurship. Foundation president Lynnette Forde highlighted the institute's role in fostering community pride, while Butler officials, including education director Joyce Mistovich and executive director Dr. Louis Zona, expressed deep appreciation for the support, noting it will enable interactive experiences for diverse audiences, strengthen partnerships, and aid in regaining museum accreditation by aligning with goals of equitable access and long-term collection sustainability.
Business Brief

Dial In Your Game at Golf Headquarters in Boardman
If you golf around here, you already know Golf Headquarters in Boardman is the place to gear up. I’ve been to just about every golf shop in the area, and nothing compares. They’ve got a massive selection of clubs, bags, gloves, shoes, apparel, balls, and everything in between. And the best part? You can actually test clubs in their simulator before buying. The staff knows their stuff and won’t just throw you the most expensive option. They actually help you find what fits your swing. That’s how I found my Titleist driver. And yeah, I’m a lefty, so finding left-handed gear locally can be a nightmare, but these guys actually stock it.
Their putting green setup is surrounded by a huge selection of putters. That’s where I picked up my Odyssey, and I swear my short game has never been better. I also burn through gloves every season, and they consistently have solid deals on them. Whether you're a scratch golfer or just hacking it around with your buddies on the weekend, this is the spot to hit before you hit the course. It’s a local shop run by people who live and breathe the game, and it shows.

Blue Wolf Tavern
The Blue Wolf Tavern in Boardman, is a fantastic spot for a delicious meal! The atmosphere is warm and inviting with a charming fireplace, and the food is consistently perfected— I loved the Blackened Chicken Cajun Alfredo and their Yankee cocktail. Great service and reasonable prices make it a go-to for any occasion. Highly recommend!

Charity Spotlight
Pitch Is Ready for His Second Chance, and You Can Help Even More at BLINGO

Pitch has come a long way from the heartbreaking conditions he was rescued from. At just a year old, he survived a hoarding and breeding situation that left him emaciated, covered in sores, and unsure of the world. But with time, patience, and a lot of love from his caregivers at Animal Charity, Pitch has transformed into a healthy, happy, and affectionate dog with a whole lot of love to give. He’s playful, energetic, and once he feels safe, his goofy, snuggly personality shines through. He’s the kind of dog who just wants to be by your side, soaking up attention and being your loyal shadow. All he needs now is a family to call his own.
If you’ve been thinking about adding a new best friend to your life, this is your sign. Pitch is ready to leave the shelter behind and finally know what it feels like to be home. And if you want to support more dogs like him, grab your tickets to Animal Charity’s Designer Purse BLINGO fundraiser on Friday, September 26 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The event includes dinner, 10 rounds of bingo for designer purses and sparkling jewelry, plus raffles and door prizes. Every ticket helps care for animals like Pitch, making it a night that gives back in a big way.
