Steel Valley Spotlight

Severe Thunderstorm Rocks Valley

A powerful storm swept through the Mahoning Valley on March 15, 2025, leaving thousands without power and causing widespread damage across Youngstown, Boardman, and Austintown. Strong winds and heavy rain brought down trees and power lines, leading to road closures and extended outages. Crews have been working around the clock to restore electricity, with most areas now back online. Local shelters stepped in to assist those in need, and cleanup efforts continue as residents recover from the storm’s impact.

Trumbull County Moves $2M to Prevent Layoffs

Trumbull County commissioners approved a $2 million transfer from the emergency reserve fund to cover departmental budget shortfalls and prevent layoffs. Rising costs have strained local budgets, and this move ensures essential services continue without disruption. While the funding provides temporary relief, officials are exploring long-term solutions to maintain financial stability.

Sheetz in Austintown Sold $1 million Winning Lottery Ticket

A lucky individual in Ohio recently hit the jackpot, winning $1 million from a VIP Millions scratch-off ticket purchased in Mahoning County. The winning ticket was bought at a Sheetz convenience store located on Route 46 in Austintown. Opting for the annuity payment plan, the winner will receive $40,000 annually for 25 years before taxes, which amounts to approximately $28,000 per year after tax deductions.

Business Brief

Mr. Darby's Vintage & Antique Emporium

Mr. Darby’s Vintage & Antique Emporium has officially relocated to a larger space at 8574 Market Street in Boardman, formerly home to Joann Fabrics. This move gives the beloved antique shop over 25,000 square feet to showcase its incredible collection of antiques, collectibles, primitives, glassware, and one-of-a-kind treasures. Known for its ever-changing inventory and unique finds, the expansion allows for more vendors, better displays, and an even more enjoyable shopping experience.

After mentioning their big move in last week’s edition, we knew we had to check out the new spot for ourselves. So, this past Friday morning, my mother and I stopped in, and we were both impressed by the variety and charm of the shop. Every aisle featured antiques from all eras, and the selection truly had something for everyone. Whether you’re a serious collector or just love browsing, Mr. Darby’s remains a must-visit destination in the Mahoning Valley. If you haven’t been yet, now’s the perfect time to explore the new space and see what hidden gems are waiting inside!

The Bunker: Indoor Golf Simulator in Southern Park Mall

Looking for a new spot to enjoy some golf year-round? The Bunker Indoor Golf Simulator in Boardman has you covered. Located at the Southern Park Mall, this place offers top-notch simulators with Foresight technology, letting you practice your swing, play famous PGA Tour courses, or even try out fun game modes. Don’t be intimidated if you’re new to golf—everyone’s super welcoming, and there’s something for all skill levels. One thing I really like about The Bunker is how they’ve got private bays with comfy seating and waitstaff, making it feel like a premium experience. There’s no better place to work on your game or just have a good time, so stop putting it off and check out The Bunker in Boardman!

Charity Spotlight

Voices of the Trumbull Pound Dogs

Voices of the Trumbull Pound Dogs is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming abandoned and neglected dogs in Trumbull County. Through vet care, fostering, and advocacy, they give countless dogs a second chance. Dogs like Pepsi, a one-year-old lab mix who is fully vetted, great on a leash, and always ready for a car ride and a pup cup. She, like many others, is waiting for the right family to bring her home.

To support their mission, the group is hosting its First Annual Purse Bingo on Friday, March 28, at Cimenero’s Banquet Center in Niles. Doors open at 5:30 PM, with an evening of designer purses, raffles, and a 50/50 drawing—all to help rescue dogs in need. This BYOB event has limited tickets, so don’t wait to get yours. Every event and adoption helps more dogs find the love and care they deserve. Learn more about this event by clicking here
