Steel Valley Spotlight

Puppy Saved from Well in Champion

The Champion Fire Department successfully saved a puppy that had fallen into a well. The six-month-old pug, called Tater, found itself trapped at the bottom of a 7-foot well when the well's cover collapsed. Engine 21 from the Champion Fire Department responded to the incident and managed to safely retrieve the puppy from the well without any injuries. After the rescue, Tater was happily reunited with its owners.

YSU Battles in Horizon League Tournament

Youngstown State University battled in the 2025 Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments from March 4 to 11, with the men’s team entering as the fourth seed and the women’s team as the ninth seed. Both squads fought hard, looking to make a statement in the conference, as Penguins fans rallied behind them for a strong postseason push. While final results are still settling, the tournament showcased YSU’s grit and determination, keeping the program’s momentum alive for the future.

Mr. Darby’s Antique Emporium Moves to Bigger Boardman Location

Mr. Darby’s Antique Emporium has moved to a larger location at 7386 Market Street in Boardman, formerly Joann Fabrics, giving shoppers more space to explore its unique collection of antiques, vintage dĆ©cor, and collectibles. The new spot offers a fresh layout, improved accessibility, and an even bigger selection while maintaining the charm that has made it a local favorite. Open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM, it remains a must-visit for treasure hunters and antique lovers alike.

Business Brief

Giangelo’s Pizzeria in Boardman

Giangelo’s Pizzeria in Boardman has long been a favorite for New York-style pizza, wings, and hearty Italian dishes, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and generous portions. I stopped in for lunch this past Saturday, and while the food came out quickly and was pretty good, it didn’t quite live up to past visits. The real hiccup was the service—once our food arrived, we didn’t see our waitress again until we were finished. A friendly staff member cleaning tables helped me get a drink refill, but overall, the experience felt a little off. I’ve had great visits here before, so hopefully, this was just a one-time slip, because Giangelo’s has always been a solid go-to for local comfort food.

Iron Eagle Fitness 24/7 Gym

Looking for a new spot to workout? Iron Eagle Fitness is open 24/7 and has you covered. With a brand new hip-thrust machine, they have almost every machine you can think of. Don’t be intimidated, everyone’s extremely friendly (even the big scary body builders)! One thing I really like about this gym is how clean they keep it, requiring you to wipe down machines after you’re done using them. There’s no better place to get your health on, stop putting it off and check out Iron Eagle Fitness in downtown Hubbard.

Charity Spotlight

Campbell Cruelty and Humane Rescue

When the Campbell Police step in to rescue animals from abuse and neglect, they don’t do it alone. A dedicated group called Campbell Cruelty and Humane Rescue is always ready to provide emergency vet care, food, foster homes, and the love these animals have never known. No matter the circumstance, they step in where others have failed, turning pain into hope and giving every animal a chance at the life they deserve.

But the fight doesn’t stop at rescue. This team works alongside Campbell officials to push for stronger animal protection laws, including an anti-tethering ordinance and an enclosure ordinance that are already in place. Now, they’re rallying behind a crucial new measure—a Backyard Breeder (BYB) ban, set for its final reading on March 19. If passed, this ordinance will help officers crack down on irresponsible breeding and give more animals a path to safety. These advocates know every law passed, every foster home opened, and every meal provided makes a difference. Because no animal deserves to suffer, and together, they’re making sure fewer will.
