Steel Valley Spotlight

Local Standout Drafted in MLB by Braves

Canfield’s own Landon Beidelschies just took a major step toward living out every ballplayer’s dream after being selected by the Atlanta Braves in the sixth round of the 2025 MLB Draft. A standout left-handed pitcher who rose through the ranks from Canfield High School to Ohio State and then Arkansas, Beidelschies impressed scouts this past season with a 4–0 record and 70 strikeouts over 61 innings. With a signing bonus estimated around $338,000, his draft day moment isn’t just a personal victory—it’s a proud milestone for the entire Mahoning Valley. Landon’s path serves as proof that with talent and hard work, big league dreams can absolutely start right here at home.

Tex-Mex Eatery Shuts Down Abruptly

The Margarita King restaurant in Niles has suddenly announced its indefinite closure via a social media post on Monday evening, expressing gratitude to its loyal customers for their support over the years. Attempts to contact the establishment for more details failed as the phone number on their website was non-functional. Known for offering authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine, the chain operates multiple locations in the region, though this specific site is shutting down without further explanation.

Youngstown State University Appoints New Interim Dean to Williamson College of Business Administration.

Youngstown State University has appointed Christina Saenger as the new interim dean for its Williamson College of Business Administration, taking over from Betty Joe Licata. This follows the departure of previous dean Kelly Wilkinson last year, who moved to become dean at Indiana University East's School of Business and Economics. Saenger, who joined YSU in 2014 and earned distinguished professor status in 2022, will hold the position while the university launches a national search for a permanent dean this fall.

Business Brief

Boulder Creek Delivers Scenic Views and a Top-Tier Burgers

This past weekend, my friends and I made the trip to Boulder Creek Golf Club, and I’ve got to say, it instantly became one of my favorite courses. The layout is stunning, with beautifully maintained fairways and a peaceful, wooded backdrop that makes you forget you’re still in Ohio. Hole 17, with its island green, added the perfect touch of drama late in the round and made for a memorable finish.

While the halfway house was oddly closed at 4 PM on a Saturday (come on, guys!), that twist of fate actually worked in our favor. We headed to the clubhouse restaurant and, no exaggeration, I discovered one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. If you’ve been reading this newsletter, you know I’m serious about my burgers, and this one absolutely earns a spot in my top five. Great golf, great food, and even better company made for a perfect day at Boulder Creek.

Muscarella's Cafe Italia

IMuscarella's Cafe Italia is located in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania (near the Ohio border) is a local gem if you enjoy Italian food. The food is fantastic with giant portions. You’ll likely need a doggie bag unless you skip a meal or two before. With friendly and professional service, you need to add this to your spots to go.

Charity Spotlight

Old Man Redd Deserves a Soft Place to Land

Redd isn’t just another shelter dog. He’s a familiar face with a heartbreaking story. Adopted back in 2014, Redd was returned to Animal Charity in 2024 after his owner faced serious life struggles, including homelessness and health issues. Now nearly 13 years old, Redd is spending his golden years in the shelter’s dish room. He’s a sweet, gentle soul who still has little bursts of playful energy and a signature tongue-out grin when he’s begging for treats. Despite the stress of shelter life, he’s full of love and hope.

A family member of mine volunteers at Animal Charity and gets to see Redd regularly. She says he’s one of the kindest dogs she’s met. He quietly waddles over while she washes dishes, sniffing out treats in her pocket and charming her into sharing. Redd isn’t asking for much. He just wants a calm home with no kids or pets, a cozy spot to nap, and someone to love him. Let’s make sure he doesn’t spend the rest of his life behind shelter walls.
