Boardman ceremony honors lives and dreams lost too soon.

At the 121st annual Boardman Township Memorial Day program, U.S. Navy veteran Jennifer Baun delivered a keynote address honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Speaking at Boardman Park’s Maag Outdoor Arts Amphitheater, hosted by the Boardman-Youngstown Kiwanis Club, Baun shared stories of individuals like Sharon Lane, a nurse killed at 25 in Vietnam, whose bravery saved lives; Eleanor Vietti, America’s first female POW in Vietnam, whose fate remains unknown; and Donald Clark, a Boardman High graduate and Army pilot killed in a 2008 Iraq helicopter crash. Baun, a lifetime AMVETS member, emphasized their dreams cut short, while the ceremony also honored local veterans like Lt. Richard Balog and Dr. Frederick Soller Sr., concluding with a wreath-laying, armed forces salute, and a flyover, as attendees expressed gratitude for all who served.

Valley’s Red Rose Wrestling Club empowers girls to compete on the mat.

At the Red Rose Wrestling Club in Austintown, Ohio, girls like 7-year-old Phoenix Toney, who traded cheerleading for wrestling, are finding their place in a traditionally male-dominated sport. Meeting twice weekly at Dinger’s Athletic Facility, the club—the only all-girls wrestling program in the area—has grown from four members to about 30, drawing girls from Boardman, Canfield, Poland, and beyond. Coaches Joey Murray and Jordan Beadle, both with deep wrestling roots, foster a tight-knit yet competitive environment where athletes like Ella Thomas and Isabella Williams have earned spots at the 2025 USMC Junior Nationals. The club builds confidence and resilience, teaching girls to embrace challenges and grow through a sport that’s rapidly gaining popularity among females nationwide.

Sharon Regional receives $2 million state grant for facility upgrades.

Sharon Regional Medical Center received a $2 million grant from Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to fund infrastructure upgrades, including at least $500,000 for improvements to the hospital’s catheterization laboratory and the rest for enhancing the facility’s physical plant. Announced by Sen. Michele Brooks, the funding supports the hospital’s recent reopening and ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable, high-quality healthcare for Sharon and surrounding communities. Medical Properties Trust, the hospital’s property lessor, is also contributing to projects like roof replacement. Construction timelines are still in progress, but patient care will continue uninterrupted, strengthening the hospital’s role as a vital community resource.

Youngstown Drip: Feeling Better One Drip At A Time

If you’re looking to relax, recharge, and boost your health in style, Youngstown Drip in Canfield is a hidden gem worth checking out. My wife and I recently stopped in for a visit and were warmly greeted by Rachel, who made us feel right at home. She walked us through the variety of IV drip options, explaining the benefits of each with care and clarity. We ended up choosing the Defensive Drip to help build up our immune systems before our upcoming trip to Alaska, and it was exactly what we needed.

The whole experience took just over an hour, and it honestly felt more like a mini spa day than a medical treatment. We kicked back in reclining chairs in the calming Drip Room, where the lights were dimmed and salt lamps added a warm, relaxing glow. It was peaceful, professional, and incredibly rejuvenating. Whether you’re prepping for travel, recovering from fatigue, or just want a wellness boost, Youngstown Drip offers a refreshing and modern way to take care of yourself.

Charity Spotlight

Meet Cherry and Demetrius—Two Animals, Two Big Hearts, One Chance at a New Life

Cherry is a sweet and loving cat, estimated to be about 2–3 years old, who was found wandering a busy parking lot before being rescued by Healthy Hearts and Paws Project. Now neutered, house-trained, and safe, Cherry is adjusting well and showing his affectionate side to everyone he meets. While we’re still learning more about his personality, one thing is clear—he’s gentle, grateful, and ready to settle into a quiet, loving home where he can finally relax and feel secure.

Demetrius, on the other hand, is an energetic, fun-loving pup with a heart as big as his personality. He came to the shelter a little shy but has since warmed up and is eager to play, run, and enjoy life. He’s best suited for an active home where he’ll get plenty of exercise, attention, and a bit of training to match his enthusiasm. He’s curious about other dogs and would likely enjoy a canine companion. While Cherry and Demetrius don’t need to be adopted together, we’re spotlighting them both this week in hopes of finding each of them the perfect forever home—because every animal deserves their happily ever after.
