Canfield Fair Brings Big Acts and Classic Fun Back to the Valley

The Canfield Fair is back from August 27 to September 1, and this year’s lineup is loaded with reasons to show up early and stay late. Country star Brad Paisley takes the Grandstand stage on Sunday, August 31, and Lynyrd Skynyrd will close out the fair with a rockin’ performance on Monday, September 1, joined by Dillon Carmichael. But it’s not just about the music. This six-day tradition packs in everything from demolition derbies and tractor pulls to unbeatable fair food, livestock shows, and games for the whole family. Whether you’re a Canfield regular or haven’t been in years, this is the weekend that brings the whole Valley together.

New Wagyu Butcher Shop Opens in Trumbull County

Something exciting just rolled into Champion and it’s a dream come true for steak lovers. A family-owned Wagyu cattle ranch has opened its very own butcher shop at 115 State Road NW, giving locals direct access to some of the highest-quality beef you’ll find in the Valley. Raised right on their Trumbull County farm, these cattle are the real deal, full-blood Wagyu with deep roots and even deeper flavor. The grand opening this weekend brought a wave of curious foodies, and for good reason: this isn’t your average meat counter. Every cut is locally raised, expertly handled, and packed with that signature Wagyu richness. Whether you’re grilling for a crowd or treating yourself to something unforgettable, this new shop is bringing something fresh and seriously delicious to the Mahoning Valley.

'Jazz in the Park' Celebrates Its 32nd Season

Occasionally, a pleasant late-summer Sunday rolls around, offering the chance to savor live jazz tunes in Youngstown's Wick Park. Celebrating its 32nd season this year, the "Jazz in the Park" series—described on its Facebook page as delivering "Great music. Even greater company and community"—hosts these outdoor gatherings right in the park. This past weekend's performance was led by Cleveland's "The Band with No Name," as part of a longstanding lineup showcasing regional jazz talents that have enriched the city's cultural scene for more than three decades. According to series president Jeff Green, the goal is to spark interest in the arts among all ages, particularly children and seniors, while creating a welcoming venue for everyone to engage. Wrapping up the season, the last show on August 31 at Wick Park will spotlight the Unit Experience Project from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Business Brief

100 Years of Jay’s Hot Dogs and Still Going Strong

I stopped by Jay’s Famous Hot Dogs in Boardman this weekend for lunch, something I’ve done more times than I can count, and it reminded me why this place is such a local legend. They’re celebrating 100 years in business, which is just wild to think about. Jay’s has been part of my life since I was a kid. It’s a family tradition for me and my dad. I always go for the Jay’s Original with chili, onion, and mustard, and every bite still hits like it’s the first time. The flavor hasn’t changed, and neither has the friendly service.

A few years back, they gave the inside a much-needed update, but I still miss the old-school charm it used to have. Still, that big A-frame building is as iconic as ever, and the prices remain shockingly affordable. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need bells and whistles. It wins with history, flavor, and consistency. Whether you’ve been a regular your whole life or have somehow never tried it, now’s a perfect time to stop in and be part of a century-long tradition.

Buhl Park Cycling & Pump Track

Looking to get some fresh air and ride a smooth track? Buhl Park in Hermitage is the perfect place for you. Recently paved and actively taken care of, this track offers a smooth ride for skaters or bikers. It’s also the perfect place to teach your kids how to ride. It may look intimidating, but it’s actually really tame and a lot of fun. Everyone riding it is always so friendly. So, toss on a helmet and check it out.

Charity Spotlight

Bingo, Bling, and One Dog Waiting for a Home

Bob Marley has been waiting far too long at the shelter, and he’s starting to wonder if his person is ever going to walk through the door. At first glance, he might seem a little unsure, barking from behind the kennel bars, but that’s just the noise and stress of shelter life. Once you sit with him, you’ll see a totally different dog: goofy, smart, playful, and full of love to give. He’s not one to share his human with other pets, but if you’re looking for a loyal companion who’s been patiently waiting for his shot, Bob might just be your perfect match.

If you’re looking for a fun night out and a chance to support dogs like Bob, mark your calendar for Animal Charity’s Designer Purse BLINGO on Friday, September 26 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman. Doors open at 5:30 PM with a buffet-style dinner and social hour, and bingo kicks off at 6:30 PM. Ten exciting rounds await: five for dazzling jewelry and five for designer handbags, including a grand prize Louis Vuitton. There will be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, a massive basket raffle, and a cash bar. Tickets are flying fast and the last day to grab yours is September 19. Come for the fun, stay for the cause, and help animals like Bob Marley find the homes they deserve.
