Good Morning Youngstown!
Did you guys make it out to the Canfield Fair? We sure did! We walked around for hours taking it all in. Our favorite part of going to the fair is always the elephant ear. We thoroughly enjoyed them. Every year we go it prepares us for fall and all the festivities that come along with it. So, pour yourself up a nice big cup of coffee, and enjoy this week’s edition of the Steel Valley Scoop.

Horror Hits the Drive-In This October
Skyway Drive-In in Warren is about to get spooky. The third annual Sinister Horror Fest, hosted by Dead Ink Apparel, returns October 3–4 with two nights of back-to-back horror classics, indie scares, and Halloween fun for the whole family. Expect double-screen lineups featuring films like Night of the Living Dead, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, The Devil’s Rejects, Thirteen Ghosts, Army of Darkness, Pumpkinhead, and many more. Over 35 vendors will be set up with horror merch and handmade goods, and daytime festivities on Saturday include laser tag, costume contests, pumpkin carving, a bounce house, trunk decorating, and trick-or-treating. Horror actor Lew Temple (from The Walking Dead and The Devil’s Rejects) will be there both nights for meet-and-greets. Admission is $10 each night, but Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. is free to enter. Whether you’re a die-hard horror fan or just looking for a creepy-good night out, this is one October event you don’t want to miss.
Local Judge Leverages TikTok for Divorce Guidance
Trumbull County Family Court Judge David Engler is using TikTok to help people navigate the challenging divorce process by posting videos with insights, funny court stories, tips on courtroom behavior (in-person or virtual), and a mix of inspiration and humor—without offering legal advice. As he explains, it's a way to reach and impact people, making the emotional experience less intimidating, especially for those handling it themselves. His bailiff, Caleb Holscher, notes it's unusual for a judge to have such a social media presence, and you can find Engler's content under the handle @judgingdavid2.
Local Ice Cream Shop Expands to Canfield
Cockeye Creamery is growing beyond its original Warren spot by opening a new location in Canfield's Village Square Shopping Center on North Broad Street. They'll be hosting open interviews from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, though no specific opening date for the shop has been announced yet.

A Night at the Canfield Fair: Food, Friends, and Lifelong Memories
The 179th Canfield Fair ran from August 27 to September 1, lighting up the Valley with six full days of country music energy, demolition derbies, and tractor pulls. Brad Paisley took the stage on Sunday, August 31, and Lynyrd Skynyrd closed things out on Labor Day, helping keep the fair’s reputation as the second largest county fair in Ohio on solid footing. The fairgrounds buzzed with excitement, from livestock showcases to artisan booths and carnival rides, every corner promising memories old and new. It’s one of those places where tradition meets today, and where a cold evening feels like home.
Our Saturday night double date perfectly captured what the fair is all about: comfort food, small moments, and a whole lot of heart. The food options are wild in the best way, elephant ears, street tacos, classic lemonade stands, and my personal favorite, a little Chinese food booth tucked in the back left corner. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid; I’ve watched the children who once ran the lemonade stand grow up and now help behind the counter with their parents. That kind of generational magic? That’s Canfield Fair in one bite. The butterfly room, at just four dollars, was an absolute highlight. My wife and I had butterflies fluttering on us like they’d chosen us, delightful and unforgettable.
Even the pumpkin contest had a twist this year. Thirteen-year-old Kali McMillin of Salem took the prize with a 954-pound pumpkin, marking the smallest winning gourd since 2013. But humble in size doesn’t mean humble in spirit, the pumpkins still captivate like they always do. We wrapped the night wandering the speed barns, gently petting the horses under soft lights, and soaking in that timeless fair glow. We skipped the headline shows this year but left with full bellies, full hearts, and plans to come back, again and again.

Name You’ll Never Forget: Kato

Hi, I’m Kato, and trust me, once you meet me, you won’t forget the name. Around here, I’ve got a bit of a reputation… the good kind. They call me the staff favorite, the charmer of hearts, the dog with main character energy. And I mean, come on, look at me. I’ve got the jawline of a movie star, the smarts of a professor (I can speak, thank you very much), and a tail wag that could probably power a small city if science would just catch up. Every time someone walks by my kennel, I act like they’re the best part of my day. Because honestly, they are, especially if they’ve got belly rubs or call me handsome boy (which I very much am).
But behind all that charm is a dog who’s just waiting for his forever person. I love toys, cuddles, and being the center of attention. I’ve got a spark that lights up the room, and the humans here? They spoil me with love, extra treats, secret snuggles, and yes, someone really did try to teach me to wink (pretty sure I nailed it). I’m the kind of dog who will make you laugh, keep you company, and never let you feel alone. So if you’re looking for a loyal sidekick with a big heart and even bigger personality, I’m ready to be your guy. Let’s make some magic together.
