Steel Valley Spotlight

Conservation Group Moves to Buy Coalburg Lake

A big win for Hubbard Township unfolded this July as the Western Reserve Land Conservancy finalized a near-complete deal to purchase the aging Coalburg Lake Dam property. Their goal is to halt the planned demolition of the 100-year-old dam and instead repair and maintain it for public use. Plans include donating the land to a public entity, potentially MetroParks or another local agency, once funding is secured. If successful, the effort would preserve a beloved local landmark and transform the area into a long-term community asset. Locals have rallied behind saving Coalburg Lake, and this move could finally secure its future for fishing, walking, and quiet appreciation of nature.

Local Mini Golf Course Enhances Artwork with Spray Paint Upgrades

Parto’s Golf on Route 616 in Youngstown revamped its mini golf course with vibrant new artwork by Charli Cupan, a 23-year-old artist who caught their attention at Waterfire Sharon. Known for her murals and art sales, Charli uses spray paint in a unique way, spontaneously layering colors without waiting for them to dry, creating stunning visuals that only take shape at the end. The project took about two weeks to complete, adding a fresh, colorful vibe to the course. With sunny weather ahead and summer slipping away, it’s the perfect time to check out the upgraded course and enjoy Charli’s art with the kids!

Eastwood Field's Taco and Margarita Festival Called Off

The Taco and Margarita Festival set for July 26 at Eastwood Field in Niles has been canceled. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers explained that the promotions company behind the event shifted its business model and can no longer follow through with its commitments. If you bought tickets, you can reach out to the Scrappers Box Office for a refund.

Riser Tavern: Boardman’s Spot for Burgers and Brews

Riser Tavern & Grill in Boardman is one of those places that gets everything right—good food, great drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere that keeps people coming back. Whether you're grabbing a bite after work or catching a game with friends, Riser's menu has you covered with favorites like loaded nachos, juicy burgers, wings, and cold beer on tap. The patio is a local favorite during warm weather, and the staff always makes you feel welcome. It’s a casual, reliable hangout spot that feels like a neighborhood staple—because it is.

Auto Toys (Auto Evolution / Noel's Car Toys)

I had a fantastic experience at Auto Toys (Auto Evolution / Noel's Car Toys) in Niles, OH, for my car's window tinting! The staff was friendly, professional, and highly knowledgeable, guiding me through the process with ease. They did a flawless job on the tint, making my car look sleek and stylish, all at a great price. Scheduling was fast and easy, and the turnaround time was impressive. The team clearly cares about quality and customer satisfaction, and I’d highly recommend Auto Toys to anyone needing top-notch automotive services!

Tinker the Wiggle Queen is Looking for Her Person

Tinker might be small, but her personality fills the room. This spunky senior girl is deaf and beginning to lose her eyesight, but she doesn’t let that stop her from living life to the fullest. Her signature move? A wiggly little strut that wins over everyone she meets. Tinker needs a calm, adult-only home where she can be the only pet and where her boundaries are respected. With the right person, she’ll be a loving and loyal companion who just wants to be understood, cuddled, and appreciated for the special dog she is.

You can meet Tinker at Animal Charity of Ohio’s upcoming adoption event on Saturday, July 26 from 12 PM to 4 PM. While same-day adoptions aren’t available, it’s a great chance to spend time with Tinker and other adoptable animals who are waiting for their forever homes.
