Steel Valley Spotlight

Mahoning Valley Stars Land Their Shot in the NFL

Two hometown stars are making their NFL dreams a reality—and Youngstown couldn’t be prouder. Redd Douglas, a Chaney High School alum and standout wide receiver from the University of Findlay, is heading to the New York Giants as a rookie minicamp invitee. Not far behind him, Warren Harding graduate and powerful Michigan State running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams has signed on as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers. It’s a huge moment for two hardworking local athletes who chased their dreams and are now getting their shot on football’s biggest stage. The entire Mahoning Valley will be watching—and rooting for them every step of the way!

Soulja Boy Set to Perform at Westside Bowl on April 29

Soulja Boy, the artist behind early 2000s hits like "Crank That" and "Turn My Swag On," will bring his Swag Tour to Westside Bowl in Youngstown on Tuesday, April 29. Known for helping define a generation of pop-rap and viral dance moves, Soulja Boy’s appearance at the smaller venue is expected to draw a mix of longtime fans and new listeners. Doors open at 7 PM, with the show starting at 8 PM. Local artists Krypto Divine and Paris Stephan are set to open the night. Tickets are available now, with the first 100 early bird tickets priced at $20, general admission at $30, and $35 the day of the show. A $50 VIP add-on is also available, offering an after-show meet-and-greet, photo opportunity, and autograph (a separate general admission ticket is required for entry). Soulja Boy’s stop in Youngstown adds a notable name to the growing list of national acts visiting local venues this spring.

Hubbard Junior Scores a Perfect 36 on his ACT

A junior at Hubbard High School, Jackson Corbett, is dreaming big—Ivy League big—after nailing a perfect score on the ACT. He pulled off a composite score of 36 on the college admissions test in February, a rare achievement that fewer than half a percent of students manage to hit.

This wasn’t Jackson’s first rodeo with the ACT. He’d taken it twice before, earning a 30 and then a 32, showing steady improvement each time. Still, when the latest results came in, he was floored. He’d hoped for a bump, but a perfect score? That left him stunned and buzzing with excitement, a huge step closer to his goal of landing at an Ivy League school.

Top Notch Diner in Cortland Lives Up to Its Name

If you’re ever passing through Cortland, Top Notch Diner is a stop you don’t want to miss. We made our first visit recently, and even though we don’t get out to Cortland often, this place instantly made us feel right at home. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier—warm smiles, quick service, and that genuine small-town hospitality that’s hard to find these days.

And the food? Absolutely lived up to the name. The French toast was the real standout—thick, perfectly cooked, and dusted with just the right amount of sweetness. It’s the kind of breakfast that leaves you already thinking about your next trip back. Whether you're a Cortland regular or just swinging through, Top Notch Diner needs to be on your list. It’s the kind of place where great food and great people come together—and you leave already planning your next visit.

Charity Spotlight

Caleb Is Waiting for His Second Chance at a Real Home

Meet Caleb, a sweet, gentle soul who’s ready to leave shelter life behind and finally find the forever home he deserves. Currently in the care of Voices of the Trumbull Pound Dogs, Caleb is around 3 years old and 60 pounds, neutered, fully vetted, and just about as easygoing as they come. He’s the quiet type—you’ll usually find him lounging peacefully in his kennel, watching the world go by, often overlooked simply because he isn’t one to demand attention. But take him out for a walk and you’ll see a different side: a happy, curious pup who loves to explore and adores every person he meets.

Caleb knows some basic commands, gets along with other dogs (meet-and-greet required), and would trade anything for a soft couch and a family to call his own. With the holidays approaching, there’s no better time to make his wish come true. Thanks to Voices of the Trumbull Pound Dogs, Caleb has been given a second chance—now all he needs is someone to give him a home.
